The Inner West is one of the harder parts of Sydney to fit joinery into, and that is mostly down to the housing stock. Victorian and Federation terraces, workers' cottages, semis and converted warehouses were not built to modern standards, and very little in them is plumb, level or square.
That changes how we work here. Every job gets measured on site rather than off a plan, carcasses are built to suit the opening rather than a standard module, and scribed fillers do the work of absorbing walls that run out over a three-metre cabinet run. It is slower to set out and it is the only way the finished job sits tight against the wall.
Narrow floorplates, so storage goes up
Terraces and cottages give you length rather than width. Where floor area is tight we take cabinetry to the ceiling instead of stopping at a bulkhead, which adds usable storage without eating into a walkway. Overhead runs get a lift-up or push-catch door so nothing swings into head height in a narrow galley.
Out-of-square walls and party walls
Walls in older Inner West homes commonly run out 10-30mm over a cabinet run, and party walls limit how much you can chase or fix into. We set out from the longest true line, then take up the difference in scribes and fillers rather than forcing the carcasses.
Access is part of the quote
Single-fronted terraces with no side access mean cabinetry has to come through the front door and down a hallway. We size carcasses so they physically fit the access route, and where they cannot, we assemble on site.
Heritage controls in parts of the area
Several Inner West streets sit in conservation areas. Internal joinery is generally unaffected, but anything touching a facade, window or external opening is worth checking with council before it is finalised.

Frequently asked questions
Do you work in Inner West terraces with no rear access?
Yes. It is common here. We check the access route at measure — front door width, hallway turns and stair returns — and size the carcasses to suit. Where a finished cabinet cannot physically make the turn, we bring it in flat and assemble it in the room.
My kitchen walls are visibly out of square. Can that be fixed with joinery?
It can be absorbed rather than fixed. We set out from the truest long wall and take the discrepancy up in scribed fillers at the ends of the run and against tall units. The result reads square even though the wall is not. Trying to correct the wall itself is usually rendering or plastering work, not joinery.
