Frequently Asked Questions

Straight answers to the questions Sydney homeowners ask us most — about costs, timelines, approvals, and the way we work. Based in Liverpool, servicing all of Sydney.

General

What does InsideOut Joinery do?

InsideOut Joinery is a family-run Sydney business specialising in custom kitchens, bathrooms, built-in and walk-in wardrobes, laundries and custom joinery. We are joinery-led renovators, which means the cabinetry and storage are planned first and the other trades are built around them. We take on single rooms or full-home renovations, with one team covering every trade — cabinetmaker, plumber, electrician, tiler and painter. Based in Liverpool, we work across all of Sydney, and we are a licensed NSW contractor with 12 years of experience.

Where is InsideOut Joinery based?

InsideOut Joinery is based in Liverpool, in South West Sydney, NSW 2170. Liverpool is our home base, and being local to the south west means there is no travel surcharge in our pricing for that region and a fast response when something needs attention. From Liverpool we travel across the whole of Sydney for kitchens, bathrooms, wardrobes, laundries and renovations — from the inner city and eastern suburbs to the north shore, the Hills District and the western suburbs.

What areas of Sydney does InsideOut Joinery service?

We service all of Sydney. Although we are based in Liverpool, we regularly work across the Eastern Suburbs, Inner West, City Fringe, Lower and Upper North Shore, Northern Beaches, the Hills District, St George, the Sutherland Shire and Western Sydney. We have completed projects from compact inner-city apartments in Darlinghurst to large family homes in Willoughby, Epping and the Hills. If you are unsure whether we cover your suburb, call 02 5000 0402 and we will let you know straight away.

Is InsideOut Joinery licensed?

Yes. InsideOut Joinery is a licensed NSW contractor, licence number 383725C, and our ABN is 62 912 909 739. You can verify any contractor's licence on the NSW Fair Trading website, and we encourage you to check ours. Being licensed means our work meets NSW building standards, including the certified waterproofing required in bathrooms and laundries, and that you are covered by the workmanship warranties provided under Australian consumer law. It is one of the first things you should confirm with any contractor before signing.

How do I get a quote?

Send us a few photos of the space, a rough floor plan if you have one, and a short description of what you want to change. From that we can usually give you a realistic budget range quickly. For a detailed fixed quote we arrange a site visit to measure up and confirm the scope, finishes and any plumbing or electrical changes. Call 02 5000 0402 or use the contact form. There is no obligation to proceed once you have the quote.

How long has InsideOut Joinery been operating?

We have 12 years of experience in the joinery and renovation industry. Over that time we have built kitchens, bathrooms, wardrobes, laundries and full-home fitouts across Sydney, in everything from heritage terraces and inner-city apartments to large suburban family homes. That experience is the reason we can give straight answers on what will work, what a realistic timeline looks like, and where the money is best spent. The business is family-run, so the people quoting your job are the people doing it.

Kitchens

How much does a kitchen renovation cost in Sydney?

Most mid-range kitchen renovations in Sydney sit between $25,000 and $55,000. A focused cabinetry and benchtop refresh can start around $15,000, while a full structural renovation with premium finishes can exceed $80,000. The biggest cost driver is scope — whether walls and plumbing are moving — followed by the finish level and benchtop material. We source appliances at trade cost, which saves the retail markup. We give a detailed fixed quote after seeing the space rather than a ballpark that blows out later.

How long does a kitchen renovation take?

A straightforward Sydney kitchen renovation takes three to five weeks on site, and a full gut with structural work runs five to eight weeks. Before site work, allow two to four weeks to confirm the design and order materials. The longest fixed step is the benchtop, which cannot be templated until the cabinets are installed and then takes ten to fourteen days to fabricate. Because we run one team across every trade, there is no dead time between contractors, which keeps the job tight.

Do I need council approval for a kitchen renovation in Sydney?

Most internal kitchen renovations do not need council approval, because you are working within the existing footprint and not touching the structure. Approval is required if you remove or alter a load-bearing wall, change the building's external footprint, or work on a heritage-listed property. Removing a structural wall needs an engineer's report and may require a development application, which adds time. Strata apartments have their own approval process. We will tell you upfront whether your specific job needs any approval before work begins.

Can you renovate my kitchen without replacing everything?

Yes. If your layout works and the cabinetry carcasses are sound, we can replace just the doors, drawer fronts, benchtop and splashback for a fresh result at a lower cost. This keeps the plumbing and electrical in place and avoids a full strip-out, making it the most cost-effective way to update a dated kitchen. It is not the right approach if the layout has real problems or the carcasses are failing — in that case new doors only hide the issue, and we will tell you so honestly.

Bathrooms

How much does a bathroom renovation cost in Sydney?

Most Sydney bathroom renovations cost between $15,000 and $45,000. A cosmetic refresh keeping the layout can start around $8,000, while a premium bathroom with stone, a freestanding bath and custom joinery can exceed $45,000. The biggest cost drivers are whether the plumbing and waterproofing are being redone, the room size, and the tile and fixture selections. Waterproofing certified to NSW standards is mandatory and is where cheap quotes often cut corners. We give a detailed fixed quote after seeing the room.

How long does a bathroom renovation take?

A standard bathroom renovation takes about two to four weeks on site from demolition to completion, and we typically turn ours around in about three weeks once materials have arrived. Full layout changes, structural work or imported finishes add time. Before any trades start, allow four to six weeks for design, selections and ordering, because imported tiles and fixtures can have long lead times. Waterproofing also needs time to cure before tiling. Locking selections in early is what keeps the job on schedule.

What is included in a bathroom renovation quote?

A proper bathroom quote should itemise every part of the job: demolition and rubbish removal, waterproofing certified to NSW standards, floor and wall tiling including the preparation underneath, the shower screen, the toilet suite, tapware and mixers, lighting, an exhaust fan, painting, and the vanity and any custom cabinetry. If a quote bundles all that into one vague number, you cannot compare it fairly. Cheap quotes most often leave out waterproofing certification, tile preparation and rubbish removal — which is why two quotes can look very different.

Wardrobes

What types of wardrobes does InsideOut Joinery build?

We build both built-in and walk-in wardrobes, fully custom to the room. Built-in wardrobes fit within an existing bedroom wall or alcove, running floor to ceiling for maximum storage. Walk-in wardrobes fit out a dedicated room or alcove with hanging, drawers, shelving and shoe storage in single-wall, L-shape, U-shape or corridor layouts. Every wardrobe is planned around your actual storage split — how much hanging, folded and shelved space you need — and finished in melamine, polyurethane or timber veneer with quality soft-close hardware.

How much do built-in wardrobes cost in Sydney?

A single-bedroom built-in wardrobe in Sydney typically costs $2,500 to $6,000, depending on the width, the door style and the internal fitout. A walk-in wardrobe fitout runs $4,000 to $12,000, and a larger U-shaped walk-in with premium finishes and integrated lighting can go higher. The main cost drivers are the size, the finish level and the amount of internal hardware — drawers, pull-outs and shoe racks. A freestanding flat-pack unit is cheaper upfront, but a built-in adds storage and value that stays with the home.

How long does a wardrobe installation take?

Most wardrobe installations take one to three days on site, depending on the size and complexity of the fitout. The full timeline from first measure to finished wardrobe is typically three to five weeks, which covers confirming the design, fabricating the cabinetry to your exact dimensions, and scheduling the install. If the wardrobe is part of a broader bedroom or whole-home renovation, we coordinate it within that scope so it lands at the right stage. The on-site disruption is minimal compared with a kitchen or bathroom.

Laundry

Do you do laundry renovations?

Yes. Laundry renovations are one of our core services. We build custom overhead and under-bench cabinetry, appliance bays for stacked or side-by-side machines, stone or laminate benchtops on moisture-resistant substrate, troughs and tapware, pull-out hampers, and integrated ironing or broom storage. We can also design the laundry to double as a mudroom or entry storage where it sits near the back door. A laundry is a wet area, so we use moisture-resistant materials and proper sealing that hold up to daily use over the years.

How much does a laundry renovation cost?

Most laundry renovations in Sydney cost between $8,000 and $20,000. A cosmetic refresh keeping the plumbing in place can start around $4,000, while a full renovation with relocated plumbing, floor-to-ceiling storage and stone benchtops can reach $25,000. The cost is driven by the amount of cabinetry, the benchtop material and whether the trough and waste are being moved. A small laundry with lots of joinery can cost more than a large one with little — it is the cabinetry, not the floor area, that you are paying for.

Process

How does the renovation process work?

It starts with a conversation and a look at the space, either from your photos and plans or a site visit. We confirm the scope, layout and finishes, then provide a detailed fixed quote. Once you are happy, we finalise the design and order materials. On site, we sequence the trades in the right order — demolition, services, cabinetry, benchtop, finishing — all managed by one point of contact. We hand back a finished room, typically around three weeks on site for a standard scope. One team, one quote, one schedule.

What happens after I submit a quote request?

We review the photos, plans and details you send, and come back to you — usually within a day — with a realistic budget range and any questions. If it looks like a fit, we arrange a site visit to measure up and confirm the scope, finishes and any plumbing or electrical work. From there we provide a detailed fixed quote. There is no pressure and no obligation to proceed. If a phone call or a different next step makes more sense than a site visit, we will say so.

Do you use subcontractors?

We run one team that covers every trade — cabinetmaker, plumber, electrician, tiler, waterproofer and painter — all coordinated by us and scheduled in the right order. Where a specialist trade is brought in, they work under our management and to our standard, not as a separate contractor you have to chase. This is the core of how we work: you have a single point of contact responsible for the whole job, rather than five separate trades blaming each other when something slips. It is also what keeps our timelines tight.

What if something needs fixing after the job is done?

We stand behind our work. As a licensed NSW contractor, our workmanship is covered by the warranties provided under Australian consumer law, and being a family-run local business means we are easy to reach if something needs attention after handover. If an issue comes up, call us on 02 5000 0402 and we will sort it. Because we are based in Liverpool and work across Sydney, we are not a fly-in operation that disappears once the invoice is paid — our reputation runs on referrals and repeat work.
